ABSTRACT

Cargo consolidation is becoming a crucial part of international transportation and changing the customer consumption patterns of the international community. Poor connections between different operations and the delay of international express have motivated sellers and logistics organizers to put timeliness first in international multimodal transport, especially during the COVID-19 epidemic. However, for cargo with small quality and multiple batches, designing an efficient consolidation network presents a set of unique challenges, including the coupling of multiple origins and destinations (ODs), and fully utilizing the capacity of the container. We defined a multistage timeliness transit consolidation problem to decouple the multiple ODs of the logistics resource. By solving this problem, we can increase the connectivity between different phases and make full use of the container. To make this systematic multistage transit consolidation more flexible, we proposed a two-stage adaptive-weighted genetic algorithm that mainly focuses on the edge area of the Pareto front space and the diversity of the population. Computational experiments indicate that the correlation between parameters has certain regular trends, and appropriate parameter settings can lead to more satisfactory results. We also confirm that the pandemic has a giant influence on the market share of different transportation modes. Moreover, the comparison with other approaches demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to analyze the issue of food security, articulating it with the relevance of achieving SDG 2, as one of the fundamental objectives set by the United Nations Organization for Sustainable Development (2015). To achieve this end, the research focuses on four fundamental aspects: 1. The relevance of food security in the global context and the need for timely access to food for individuals, without neglecting the asymmetric structural contexts on the planet, such as hunger and poverty, which limit the conditions for development (FAO, 2009). 2. The relevance of SDG 2 for food security, the production of goods and food effectively, preventing actions that threaten life on the planet (Cóndor et. al, 2022). 3. The presence of people who suffer from hunger in the Latin American and Caribbean region, which has been on the rise since the 2010s and which limits the possibilities of access to sustainability and better living conditions (ECLAC, 2019), a fact that has been intensified with the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic (FAO, 2021). 4. The COVID-19 pandemic that has given rise to new vulnerabilities and conditions for access to food, resulting, among other things, in the stunted growth of infants under five years of age. The method used is documentary review. It concludes on the relevance of food security for the achievement of sustainable development, for the reduction of poverty and structural asymmetric conditions, without failing to recognize the distance that exists to reach the fulfillment of these objectives, especially in convulsive scenarios such as those of the global South. ABSTRACT

Osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS) is a rare but serious condition that is hypothesized to be a result of rapid correction of hyponatremia, with a catastrophic prognosis. The foci of demyelination may occur in either the pontine area or within the white matter of the cerebral hemispheres, which denotes a specific clinical presentation. We present the case of a post-COVID-19 patient who was diagnosed with ODS with typical clinical and radiological characteristics of both forms: central pontine myelinolysis and extrapontine myelinolysis. The clinical assessment of ODS encompasses a variety of differential diagnoses, including stroke, neuroinfection, neoplasia, and other demyelinating diseases. A specific characteristic of ODS is the delayed clinical manifestation after the hyponatremic state. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that there might be discrepancies between the clinical manifestations and the neuroimaging findings. The association between COVID-19 and ODS is unclear at the moment, although it can possibly be explained by the viral infection through multiple mechanisms such as renal dysfunction, diarrhea, or vomiting. ODS should be considered in cases of hyponatremia and neurological deterioration during the course of COVID-19 infection. Despite the fact that early detection and treatment of this syndrome can reduce the risk of short-term mortality and long-term disability, they do not guarantee complete recovery.

ABSTRACT

© All the contents of this journal, except where otherwise noted, is licensed under a Creative Commons Atribution License.

ABSTRACT

Brazil has experienced a notable weakening of its institutional framework related to the implementation of an agenda for sustainability since the Jair Bolsonaro Administration. Aiming to identify trends and ruptures, this paper explores four axes of current Brazilian environmental governance, taking four Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as an analysis tool: Gender (SDG 5), Energy (SDG 7), Solid Waste (SDG 12), and Life on Land (SDG 15). The study is structured as a critical essay, supported by the historical evolution of the indicators associated with the analyzed SDGs. It is concluded that there has been a weakening of environmental governance, within an understanding of the importance of a multi-stakeholder articulation and participatory governance. It is verified that there cracks have developed since 2019 at the federal level, with a discontinuity in a number of key policies, while at the territorial levels, there are historical trends that already showed injustices in the social and environmental scope, which have been aggravated in the face of the COVID-19 crisis. ABSTRACT

The article outlines the keys of the Sustainable Development Goal number 1, which sets out global guidelines for the eradication of poverty in the world: global social protection systems for the most vulnerable, mobilizing resources for cooperation, create solid regulatory frameworks at the national, regional and international levels, etc. The author reviews the path followed by the United Nations and other supranational organizations up to the formulation of the 2030 Agenda, and analyzes how the emergence of COVID-19 has affected the chronic state of poverty at a time when, in some areas of the Globe, signs of improvement were appearing. A reference to the "Next Generation EU" Program is essential, implemented by the European Union with a budget of 1.8 billion euros to help to rebuild the Old Continent after the devastating effects of coronavirus. The author recalls that poverty is not only a problem in developing countries, but also in areas considered as social and economic well-being regions, which are suffering the scarcity of resources. In the conclusions, the author presents the results of the case studies developed in 2021 by twelve teams of civil engineering students in order to find efficient actions against poverty. It was concluded that there are common patterns which difficult the way out of poverty in the short term without an economic investment and support in the planning and management of processes by means of external teams for local actions. © 2021 Asociacion Espanola de la Carretera. ABSTRACT

The pandemic of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is continuously causing hazards for the world. Effective detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can relieve the impact, but various toxic chemicals are also released into the environment. Fluorescence sensors offer a facile analytical strategy. During fluorescence sensing, biological samples such as tissues and body fluids have autofluorescence, giving false-positive/negative results because of the interferences. Fluorescence near-infrared (NIR) nanosensors can be designed from low-toxic materials with insignificant background signals. Although this research is still in its infancy, further developments in this field have the potential for sustainable detection of SARS-CoV-2. Herein, we summarize the reported NIR fluorescent nanosensors with the potential to detect SARS-CoV-2. The green synthesis of NIR fluorescent nanomaterials, environmentally compatible sensing strategies, and possible methods to reduce the testing frequencies are discussed. Further optimization strategies for developing NIR fluorescent nanosensors to facilitate greener diagnostics of SARS-CoV-2 for pandemic control are proposed.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To study conflict management within companies in the hotel sector as an integrating element of internal communication studied from a gender perspective. Hotel organizations can use internal communication as a catalyst for conflict management, focusing their attention on the role of women in the world of work, integrating them and minimizing existing inequalities and aggravated by COVID-19 in order to align with the 2030 SDGs. Methodology: A questionnaire was used together with interviews with experts who validated it, with a mixed, quantitative and qualitative approach, using the Montercarlo Simulation method for the first, providing the research with greater reliability when faced with an infinite sample. Results: Internal communication is a useful tool in the management of labor relations and conflict in companies in the studied sector. Collaborative family burdens and conflict coping stand out, related to the circumstances and characteristics of working women. Conclusions: If the integration of women in the company is combined and the focus is placed on achieving full equality, the use of internal communication will substantially improve the work environment and results. Originality and value of the article: This study provides originality in terms of the subject matter by combining three aspects that are traditionally addressed separately, such as internal communication, conflict management within organizations and the gender perspective.

ABSTRACT

Until we have strong evidence to the contrary, symptomatic hyponatremia should be treated with extra caution in COVID-19 co-infection patients as the latter could be another risk factor for the development of extrapontine myelinolysis.
